Edward J. Zampella, M.D., FAANS, FACS is recognized and a leader in neurological surgery in the Northeast region, and has been deemed to be one of New Jersey's “Top Docs” year after year in New Jersey Monthly magazine. Dr. Zampella has served until recently as the managing partner of ANS, and is a past president of the New Jersey Neurosurgical Society. He has been active in hospital leadership, serving as the President of the Medical Staff at Overlook Hospital, and has served for 3 consecutive years on the Board of Trustees for Atlantic Health System. Under his management, ANS brought new and innovative technologies into the practice and increased the number of neurosurgeons available to deliver access to many of the surrounding community hospitals.
Upon completing his tenure as managing partner at ANS, Dr. Zampella has returned to being in full-time practice concentrating on offering a full range of services to his patients.
Dr. Zampella ’s areas of clinical expertise include: functional, restorative and stereotactic neurosurgery including deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's disease; spinal cord stimulation and intra-spinal drug infusion therapy for chronic pain and spasticity; surgical management of trigeminal neuralgia and hydrocephalus, and the surgical treatment of refractory epilepsy.
Dr. Zampella is a recognized expert in the surgical treatment of tumors of the brain, skull base, and spinal cord. He performs endoscopic surgery of the pituitary gland, and utilizes advanced techniques such as intra-operative surgical navigation (Stealth) and stereotactic radio-surgery (Cyber Knife) he was one of the first doctors on the East Coast to work with Cyber Knife , a revolutionary tool that enables physicians to treat certain previously inoperable tumors with precise accuracy .
Dr. Zampella and Dr. Beyerl (his partner of 25 years) together have founded The ANS Partnership of Hope Brain Tumor Center, where they work along with other specialists to provide the highest quality multimodality care to patients with any type of brain tumor. The outcomes of patients under their care are among the best in the nation.
Dr. Zampella’s excellent reputation within the community and with his peers has helped make ANS the largest neurosurgical group in New Jersey and the fifth largest private neurosurgical practice in the United States.
Dr. Edward Zampella received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers College in New Brunswick, New Jersey and his M.D. degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama. His postgraduate training was completed at the Graduate Hospital of University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and his neurosurgical residency was at the University of Alabama Hospital and Clinics, and the Children's Hospital of Alabama (pediatric neurosurgery). He completed post doctoral neurology training at the Hospital for Nervous Diseases, Queen Square in London, England.
